About The Kinship Perspective

meet the photographer, miranda smith

So. Why am I here? As a wedding photographer, I mean.

Well… because wedding days go by fast - really fast - and I want to help you slow the pace down a little. More than that, wedding days are full of so many different emotions - I want to help you remember all the feelings and laughter and teary moments later, when you have the time to take them out and savor them.

C.S. Lewis has this great quote about time. He basically says that we are always surprised by how it passes: it’s too fast, it’s too slow, it’s too something - which of course is true. We are always surprised by how quickly the good things go by - and if weddings are among the best of things, well then, they’re destined to be over in a second. So let’s slow them down.

ME: I’m a firm believer that every person can be a whole box of contradicting things.

I’m not loud or easily excitable, but I love to talk - probably too much.

I’m terribly opinionated and outspoken about things… and then will spend the afternoon replaying that outspokenness in my mind, anxious that I’ve offended someone.

I adore people who are madly in love with tradition, yet also are completely comfortable with throwing out “the way things are done” to do things the way they want them done.

My favorite clients are the ones who want me to photograph them, and want to have fun.

HIM: I’m married. Which gives me a pretty strong bias for the institution of marriage; I’m crazy about it.

I’ve been married to Matt for just over 19 years and he is the most generous and patient man I’ve ever met. He’s kind and good and I’ve never known anyone who has disliked him, ever.

He plays soccer and drinks scotch and builds really big impressive buildings and loves hosting parties and teaching people things.

Best of all? He knows when to roll his eyes at me and when to hug me and say “It’s going to be okay, it’s going to be okay.” He hasn’t been wrong yet. Definitely going to keep him.

THEM: We share a house with these cool cats - Mali, Keler, and Owen. Who are, respectively: a 10-year-old 5th grade girl, a 15-year-old sophomore boy, and a 13-year-old 8th grade girl. They are the most fun, the most tender, the most obnoxious, and the most loveliest humans.

There is also a 100-pound dog named Hudson, and two black cats - Pen(ny) and Ink - running about around here. (There’s also a parakeet, but he’s pretty shy so I tend to forget he exists - sorry Twig!)

It’s not quiet, but it is fun - except when it’s not - but, well, life is real.

A few extra things:

  • I have equal love for majestic, wide open spaces and gritty cities - my favorite place in the world is on an airplane (to anywhere!).

  • I’m a runner who does around two half-marathons a year, just to prove to myself I can. I promise you, I hate to run.

  • While I love mid-century modern style, this doesn’t have to be you! Honestly, do anything with your everything and I’m in - but if you come over to my house, you will be greeted with warm wood furniture and an old fashioned bar.

  • I believe that marriage was made by God as a life-long commitment between two people to put each other ahead of themselves.

  • In a totally unconfirmed statement… it's been said that one couple who asked me to help them write their wedding day timeline got invited over for breakfast-for-dinner and a Bloody Mary making contest… (Because I really like people, remember?)

1) If you know who we’re dressed up as (in the left-hand photo above) and you book me, I will give you a prize.

2) My kid being cool in the place I call home.

3-4) Aforementioned fur-babies: Hudson, and Penny and Ink.

A little more about my work…

Amazing to work with!!! Would recommend Miranda to anyone. She was very responsive and worked with me and my Fiance' during a tight schedule. Her photography feels very natural and she the eye for capturing those candid moments. She let us be ourselves and nothing felt forced. Well worth the cost and would hire her again anytime. 10/10. THANK YOU!!! - Jenner H
